Shopping is moving into the chat window. Customers are starting to discover and buy through AI agents — and the storefront has to be ready to be read by them.

What’s changing in the landscape

  • Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP). A new open standard for agentic commerce that works across the whole journey — discovery, buying, and post-purchase. It will let customers buy directly from Google Search and Gemini, and extends to retailers like Etsy, Wayfair, Target, and Walmart. Buying in fewer steps can lift online revenue.
  • Business Agent. A conversational experience on Google Search that lets shoppers chat with your brand — a virtual associate answering product questions in your voice. Eligible U.S. retailers can activate and customize it in Merchant Center.
  • Google Ads in AI Mode + Direct Offers. A pilot that lets advertisers present exclusive offers — like a 20% discount — to shoppers ready to buy, directly inside AI Mode.
  • Shopify Agentic Commerce. Shopify, co-developer of UCP, now enables native commerce across ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini and more. Agents can carry full checkout flows: discount codes, loyalty credentials, subscription cadence, and terms — all in chat.

Where the market is heading

Agentic commerce is scaling fast. Roughly 23% of US shoppers used AI for purchases in a recent month, and early Black Friday 2025 saw 805% growth in AI-driven site traffic. Gartner expects 20% of interactions to be handled by AI agents by 2028, and McKinsey projects $3–5 trillion in agentic commerce worldwide by 2030.

The storefront is becoming a data source for agents. The brands that structure their catalog for machines will be the ones agents recommend.

Steps to prepare on Shopify

  • Complete the Category field. Fill the Category on every active product so agents understand your assortment. Bulk-edit via Matrixify or Shopify’s bulk editor. (Due Feb 1, 2026.)
  • Fill product attribute metafields. Once a category is set, complete the Metafields — fabric, color, length, care — to give agents richer detail. Start with best sellers or work category by category. (Due Mar 1, 2026.)
  • Use the Knowledge Base app. View and customize the FAQs AI agents use to answer questions about your store, monitor what buyers ask, and ensure AI represents your brand accurately.

Tips to grow in generative search (GEO)

  • Optimize product names & URLs. Include length, material, color, neckline — and gender where relevant — in titles and URLs so agents understand exactly what a product is and who it’s for.
  • Write agent-ready SEO titles & meta. Lead with gender, material, color, and key details, plus a call to action in the description.
  • Surface attributes in the description. Mirror your metafields in the customer-facing copy, and add occasion cues like “perfect for beach wedding guests.”
  • Add product-level FAQs. Give agents context on sizing, occasion, color options, and matching suggestions for more accurate recommendations.
  • Build bundles & cross-sells. Curated, complementary groupings help agents recommend related items and lift average order value.
  • Invest in evergreen content. Blog content captures informational demand, builds authority, and creates internal links — through brand storytelling, collection support, styling guidance, and collaborations.
  • Earn backlinks & PR. Authoritative coverage boosts credibility and gives agents richer context, making them more likely to recommend your products with confidence.
